Interview: Alexandra Cameron on Photography, Self-Portraits, and Working for Yourself

12:00 pm

If you reside anywhere in the blogging world, you will probably have seen Alexandra's photography. She's worked with Megs at Wonderful You and Zoella, as well as done shoots for Blogosphere Magazine. Her GIANT series is my personal favourite and I would really recommend you scroll through the photos on her website; her vision is just gorgeous. We had a quick chat about overcoming creative ruts and working for yourself, so settle down with a cuppa and get to know the lovely Alexandra.

Magic & Musings:
Thank you for taking the time to answer some of my questions, Alexandra! First of all, for any readers who don't know your background, tell me a little bit about yourself and where you are today.

Alexandra Cameron:
I'm a photographer from Cambridge in the UK. I got into photography after studying film at university. During my final year I became obsessed with websites like Flickr and DeviantArt and wanted more than anything to create and capture images like the people I followed. During this time I got a DSLR and started shooting. It pretty much gripped me from there. Anything I've learned since has been self-taught, figuring stuff out, or watching online tutorials.

Magic & Musings:
If you could describe your photography in three words, what would they be?

Alexandra Cameron:
Therapy, revealing, fragile.

Magic & Musings:
Did you have to overcome any self-confidence barriers in order to get to that place where you could share your photographs?

Alexandra Cameron:
Photography is the one area where I have some confidence actually; I'm fully in control of what I take and what I share. The rest of my life is pretty lacking in confidence so photography is a joy for me.

Magic & Musings:
On Magic & Musings I love talking about female-identifying or non-binary artists and their work. Which photographers, if any, would you say have been influences on your work? Do you have any favourites to look at when you need a spark of inspiration?

Alexandra Cameron:
Tim Walker, Annie Lebovitz, Nirrimi Haakanson.

Magic & Musings:
When it comes to portraits, they can be a very intimate and personal experiences. Is there a specific way you prepare before shooting a subject in this scenario?

Alexandra Cameron:
I don't really prepare for anything beforehand, it's all about being in the moment.

Magic & Musings:
This is a question I like to ask purely because of the variety of answers I get. I'm really interested in how people work and get things done. Do you have a particular place you work or find yourself the most productive? Are there a particular set of things that need to be in place for things to get done, like a milky cup of tea or a particular album of music you listen to?

Alexandra Cameron:
I hate silence so love to watch or listen to something in the background. Usually a series of something is good, maybe something I've watched before but still love, so I enjoy it but am not distracted by it. I mostly work in my pyjamas on the sofa or in bed.

Magic & Musings:
What do you do if you find yourself stuck in a rut creatively?

Alexandra Cameron:
Force myself to go out and take self-portraits. It gets my creative juices flowing again.

Magic & Musings:
What tools do you use to keep yourself organised?

Alexandra Cameron:
Excel is pretty much the only thing I use to help organise. That, and my calendar on my phone.

Magic & Musings:
Have you ever explored working in a medium other than photography? Is this something you could consider in the future?

Alexandra Cameron:
I studied film at university and have filmed little things on-and-off since. Would love to film more though.

Magic & Musings:
What one thing do you wish someone told you when you were first starting out as a photographer?

Alexandra Cameron:
Expect to live at home for a while. Expect to have a part-time job while you're building your business. Expect to feel lost. Expect to want to quit, but never do quit.

Magic & Musings:
Onto a fun question! Can you recommend everyone reading a book you've enjoyed recently, as well as a film and an album or song?

Alexandra Cameron:
I re-read Harry Potter every summer so looking forward to that. I adore listening to Kim Janssen; he is spectacular. I watched Girl, Interrupted again the other day and am still in love with it. Also would always suggest Almost Famous for people to watch as it's my favourite film. It's perfect.

Magic & Musings:
Is there anything else you would like to say before we finish? What's on the horizon for you in the next few months?

Alexandra Cameron:
Hopefully a new GIANT photo coming soon!
